Project Scope
RDP Interior Contractors were commissioned to resolve a severe reverberation issue in a multi-purpose school hall. As a very acoustically live environment, the client wished to create a more comfortable environment for the pupils.
As part of the Ambitions Academies Trust, Longspee Academy provides a personalised education for pupils aged 5-12 years in Key Stages 1-3 with behavioural, emotional and mental health difficulties.
The school hall is used for a range of activities from sports and PE lessons to assemblies and lunch breaks. The number of hard surfaces made the school hall a very acoustically live environment, with a severe echo. Due to the nature of the school, many of the pupils found this acoustically live environment unbearable.
RDP Interior Contractors surveyed the school hall, developing a proposal to install acoustic sound absorption panels on the ceiling and the upper boundaries of the room. By calculating the current reverberation times, RDP Interior Contractors were able to discover the acoustic panel coverage required to reduce the echo, according to the government recommendations of Building Bulletin 93: acoustic design of schools – performance standards.
Closely liaising with the client, RDP Interior Contractors created a 3D model to demonstrate how the school hall would look after the acoustic panels were installed. This helped the client visualise how the installation altered the visual appearance of the environment. As a result, the client was very pleased with the reduced reverberation and the impact the acoustic panels had upon the environment.
Due to their work ethic and delivering the project on time and to plan, RDP Interior Contractors won further contracts with Longspee Academy – supplying and installing acoustically rated suspended ceilings with dimmable LED lighting within the school key learning environments.
